Day 1 Scottsdale to Springerville – 236 mi
There is plenty to see during your journey from desert floor to Alpine forest. More than 230 bird and 72 terrestrial species live among 3,200 different desert plants in the Boyce Thompson Arboretum while "artifacts of ordinary life" are showcased on a different scale in The World’s Smallest Museum in Superior. Be prepared to pass “The Top of the World” before you enter Miami on the Gila-Pinal Scenic Road. Half way between Globe and Fort Apache, where Frontier living is on display, the road descends deeply into the Salt River Canyon and winds up again on the Eastern canyon wall. A brief detour to Greer and you’ll think that somehow you missed the directions and ended up in a village in the Swiss Alps.
Day 2 Route 666 - Devil's Highway Loop – 264 / 274 mi
This is truly a riders' dream! The legendary old Route 666 nick named the Devil’s Highway is often described as “the most exhilarating and most scenic I ever had”. The loop follows the itinerary of the Annual Route 666 Run, venturing into New Mexico as it descends and climbing back north via AZ 191. The Federal Highway Administration considers this road to be the curviest road in the nation, with 450 switchbacks and up to 1000 curves and turns in total. More than 6000 feet elevation variation will make sure that you won't get bored during the ride. The Catwalk is a five mile sidetrip from Glenwood, NM. Expect homey Mexican dishes in Alma. Enjoy the ride!
Day 3 Springerville - Scottsdale 242 mi
Your itinerary starts out on US 60 with high desert plains before the scenic road from Show Low to Payson starts to skirt the Colorado Plateau and sweeps through the largest consecutive ponderosa pine forest in the US. The Zane Grey Steak House and Saloon at Kohl's Ranch is a good lunch stop before you explore the Tonto Natural Bridge State Park which preserves the largest natural travertine bridge in the world. Western literature fans can pay tribute to the greatest western novelist by visiting the rebuilt Zane Grey cabin in Payson. Though motorcycle salvage is definitely not your destination, the one that you’ll see just south of Payson is impressive anyway. The fast paced broad sweepers of Rt. 87 provide a perfect finale to your spectacular ride.
