Day 1 Scottsdale to Flagstaff – 240 mi
You’ll approach Flagstaff through the Western passage, via the Prescott – Jerome – Sedona scenic ride. The blue water of the cactus studded Lake Pleasant, the greens of the Prescott and Kaibab National Forests and multihued formations of Red Rock Country will entertain your eyes while you roll through the twisties of the Sierra Pierta, the Black Mountains and Oak Creek Canyon. You can check-out Prescott’s famous Old West Saloon, the Palace and tour the rejuvenated ghost town of Jerome which was built on the top of Cleopatra Hill and picturesque Sedona. Enjoy the sunset from the Oak Creek Canyon lookout and arrive to the home base of your Grand Canyon Explorer in Flagstaff.
Day 2 Williams Route 66 & Grand Canyon – 212 mi
After breakfast ride east to Williams. The gateway to the Grand Canyon was founded in 1880 as a railroading and logging town. Historic steam locomotives at the Grand Canyon Railway Depot, old brick commercial buildings along main street and modest Victorian homes on tree-shaded streets reflect the late 19th century. Williams was the last town on historic Route 66 to be bypassed by I-40, and the town plays up its heritage. The Grand Canyon is 60 miles from here, straight north. Hang onto your camera as you stop at the lookouts and enjoy the breathtaking views of one of the world’s 7 natural wonders. A pleasant ride on Rt 180 takes you back to Flagstaff.
Day 3 Flagstaff Shamrock - 196 mi (3 day trip skips this)

There are several side trips you can choose from or do them all this day:

• Arizona Snowbowl – The combination of the winding road and a chairlift ride takes you to the 12356 ft high Agassiz Peak from which you can see all the way to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
• Sunset Crater National Monument – You can feel the power of the erupting volcano as you walk on the cinder and petrified lava flow of the 1,000 feet tall Sunset Crater. Its eruptions covered 800 square miles with lava and ash.
• Wupatki National Monument – Sinagua (without water in Spanish) Native Americans lived in small stone villages in the region. The Wupatki Ruin, which is the largest pueblo, is a 20 mile scenic ride from Sunset Crater with views of the Painted Desert.
• Walnut Canyon National Monument – As you walk along the undercut layers of limestone in this 400 foot deep wooded canyon you can even step in select rooms of the well preserved cliff dwellings from the 13th century.
• Meteor Crater – At 550 feet deep and 2/12 mile in circumference, the Barringer Meteorite Crater is the best preserved meteorite impact crater on earth. The crater so closely resembles the surface of the moon that NASA trained the Apllo astronauts here in the 1960’s.

Day 4 – Flagstaff to Scottsdale 176 or 202 mi
You have two routing options to get back to the Valley of the Sun:
You can take the Lake Mary – Mormon lake – Long Valley eastern passage, which provides you with a relaxed scenic ride through the Cocconino National Forest or you can enjoy the Oak Creek Canyon – Sedona ride again, exiting Red Rock Country via Rt 179 south. The later route descends into the Verde Valley and climbs up to the Colorado Plateau on Rt 260 before joining the eastern passage at the intersection of Rt 87. Only eighteen miles from here is the Tonto Natural Bridge State Park which preserves the largest natural travertine bridge in the world. Western literature fans can pay tribute to the greatest western novelist by visiting the rebuilt Zane Grey cabin in Payson. Though motorcycle salvage is definitely not your destination, the one that you’ll see just south of Payson is impressive anyway. The fast paced broad sweepers of Rt. 87 provide a perfect finale to your spectacular ride.
